VISIT

Renaissance Residences

It’s no surprise that many noble families from the Republic of Dubrovnik built their summer residences on this beautiful island setting. They enjoyed to escape from the hustle and bustle of the Old City of Dubrovnik to this oasis of greenery that is Šipan. And so will you! There is still plenty of their cultural heritage to explore

Some former palazzos still remain as proof – the ruins of a small chateau which was ascribed to René d’Anjou, the mansion of the Stjepović-Skočibuha family, the house of the famous noble family Ghetaldi, the exclusive complex Sorkočević and the summer residence Biskupovo, which was inhabited by archbishop Lodovico Beccadelli, a friend of Michelangelo.

The attractiveness of this preserved island truly is magnetic.

DISCOVER

Centuries of Oleiculture

It often seems that agriculture on a Mediterranean island goes hand in hand with growing olives – so why would Šipan be different? But it isn’t just widely known for olieculture, it also entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the island with the most olive trees compared to the size of the island and the number of inhabitants. Piculja is the olive sort indigenous to Šipan.

Centuries ago, each hamlet on the island had its own mill. At the time, the island had more than 150,000 olive trees. Even today, Šipan still has an oil mill which produces around 20 tons of oil annually from approximately 10,000 olive trees left on the island.

Can you imagine having some typical Mediterranean dish without any olive oil? Extra virgin olive oil, of course.

BE COOL

Kayak – Quad – Jet-ski

Šipan has this wonderful Mediterranean climate that many envy – warm dry summers with hardly any rain.  The resulting plant life of this biome is surprisingly enjoyable, with plenty of fruits and vegetables. Lavender, olives, citrus fruits, carob…

Thanks to the natural water reservoir in its soil, the plain that extends over 8,000 m2 from Suđurađ to Šipanska luka is very fertile. Šipan’s inhabitants were always engaged not only with maritime, but also with agriculture. The effort payed off and Šipan used to supply food for the whole region.

Apart from the flora, the fauna might surprise you too! Many crickets, grasshoppers and frogs inhabit the island. Some wild boars and golden jackals will also make a sight to remember, if you are lucky enough to find them.

SPOT

Chapels & Churches

With exactly 34 sacred buildings, scattered throughout the green hills like hidden gems, Šipan will guide you across historical epochs and architectural styles from Romantics to Renaissance.

The most precious and unique edifice dedicated to the Holy Spirit, dates from the 16th century, and was built as a fortress for defence against pirates and the Ottomans. Later, it altered its function and became a church. On this religious voyage you can also find the churches of St. John, St. Peter, Pakljena and many more.

Either renewed or in preserved ruins, all those architectural masterpieces still stand tall against time. Some are accessible to the public, so you can enjoy the spiritual atmosphere of their interiors.

KEEP FIT

Bike – Walk – Swim – Dive – Snorkel

Swimming, scuba diving and snorkelling in the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic Sea sounds great, but what about biking (with almost no traffic!), kayaking or hiking.

Instead of just walking to the beach, take the path to the highest point, Velji vrh, or discover the most beautiful viewpoint from the fortress hidden among olive groves.

Adventure sailing, canoeing and kayaking can get you to countless lagoons, bays and coves on Šipan’s shores or in the surrounding areas. Ideal for finding undiscovered sights or more private beaches.

No matter if you are an adventurer or explorer, Šipan offers a set of activities for everyone. Being a skilful and experienced host, we can help you arrange any of them.
